John Mellencamp's rock album Whenever We Wanted was released on October 8, 1991. This project represents his eleventh studio album and is notable as the first of his records to be credited solely to "John Mellencamp," dropping the "Cougar" moniker for good. Mellencamp intended the album as a return to a raw, harder-edged rock sound, moving away from the folk-rock instrumentation of his previous two releases.
The album performed well commercially, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard chart. It achieved an RIAA certification of Platinum, signifying shipments of over 1,000,000 units in the United States. Whenever We Wanted featured several significant rock hits, including the singles "Get a Leg Up" and "Again Tonight," both of which hit number 1 on the Album Rock Tracks chart for multiple weeks. "Get a Leg Up" also crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 14, while "Again Tonight" peaked at number 36 on the same chart. Other prominent tracks that charted on the Album Rock Tracks list were "Now More Than Ever" and "Last Chance."
