Vinyl Grading Standards
Vinyl Grading Standards
Records Geek, LLC strictly follows the internationally recognized Goldmine Standard for grading vinyl records, jackets, and sleeves. We take grading seriously to ensure you know exactly what condition to expect with every purchase.
Our Grading Scale
Mint (M)
Absolutely perfect in every way. The record has never been played and shows no signs of handling. This grade is reserved exclusively for factory-sealed items.
Near Mint (NM or M-)
Virtually flawless. The record appears unplayed with no visible signs of wear. It plays perfectly with excellent sound quality. The jacket and inner sleeve show only the most minimal signs of shelf wear, if any.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
Excellent condition with light signs of previous ownership. The record plays cleanly with only minor surface noise possible in the quietest passages. Light scuffs or very faint scratches may be present but do not affect enjoyment. The jacket may have slight ring wear or minor creasing.
Very Good (VG)
A solid, playable record that shows noticeable signs of use. Surface noise is audible, especially in quiet sections. Light scratches may be felt with a fingernail, and groove wear is becoming apparent. The jacket will show obvious wear such as ring wear, seam splits, or writing.
Good (G or G+)
Fully playable but well-used. Significant surface noise, ticks, and audible scratches are expected. Groove wear is noticeable. The jacket will have heavy wear, including seam splits, heavy ring wear, tape residue, or writing.
Poor / Fair (P/F)
Heavily damaged or badly worn. The record may be warped, cracked, or skip during playback. These records are sold “as-is” for collectors who need filler copies or parts. Jackets are usually in very poor condition with major damage.
Sleeve & Packaging Notes
- Generic Sleeve: A plain white or generic company sleeve (not the original release-specific artwork). Generic sleeves are not graded beyond noting they are not original.
- All pre-owned records are cleaned and inspected before listing.
- Grading is conservative — we would rather under-grade than over-grade an item.
