The first in a series of charity Christmas albums benefiting the Special Olympics, A Very Special Christmas was released on October 12, 1987 by A&M Records. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and featuring iconic artwork by Keith Haring, the album is a compilation of Christmas classics performed by a wide range of popular artists including Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, and Bruce Springsteen.
A commercial and critical success, A Very Special Christmas has sold over 2.5 million copies according to SoundScan and has been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA. This means the album has sold four million units in the United States alone.
