Released on September 13, 1986, This Side of Paradise is the second solo studio album by Ric Ocasek, the lead singer and songwriter of The Cars. While a solo effort, other Cars members played a significant role. Greg Hawkes is featured on keyboards and bass throughout the album and co-wrote "Hello Darkness." Benjamin Orr provides backing vocals on three songs, and Elliot Easton contributes guitar on "True to You." The album was produced by Ocasek himself alongside Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum.
"This Side Of Paradise" achieved moderate success, reaching a peak position of #31 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. The album's reception was largely influenced by Ocasek's reputation as a member of The Cars and his existing fan base.
