Fleetwood Mac's fifteenth studio album, Behind the Mask, released on April 9, 1990, marked a turning point for the band. It was their first album following the departure of guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, with Billy Burnette and Rick Vito joining as replacements. Despite reaching number one on the UK Albums Chart, the album's performance in the US was more modest, peaking at number twenty on the Billboard 200. "Save Me" was the album's only significant hit, achieving Top 40 success on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
While Behind the Mask wasn't a commercial juggernaut like its predecessors, it still showcased the songwriting talents of Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks. Tracks like "Skies the Limit" and "Freedom" (co-written by Nicks with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell) became fan favorites. The album received gold certification by the RIAA, signifying sales of over 500,000 copies in the US.
