The Way It Is is the debut studio album by American rock group Bruce Hornsby and the Range, released in 1986 on RCA Records. Most of the album was produced by Bruce Hornsby and Elliot Scheiner, with three tracks, The Long Race, Down the Road Tonight, and The River Runs Low, produced by Huey Lewis. Recording took place across several studios including Rumbo Recorders, Ocean Way Recording, and Village Recorder.
The album earned Bruce Hornsby and the Range the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and includes the chart-topping title track The Way It Is, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance, along with Mandolin Rain and Every Little Kiss. The band's lineup on this record features Bruce Hornsby on piano and vocals alongside David Mansfield, George Marinelli, Joe Puerta, and John Molo.
