Released on January 9, 1989, A Show of Hands is the third live album by the Canadian progressive rock band Rush, documenting the group's highly polished "synth era" of the late 1980s. Primarily recorded during the Hold Your Fire tour in 1988 at the Birmingham NEC in England, the album also features recordings from New Orleans, Phoenix, and San Diego. Produced by Peter Collins and Rush, the record is celebrated for its pristine audio quality and the virtuoso performances of Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart. The collection highlights the band's seamless integration of complex synthesizers and sequencers with their foundational power-trio rock sound. Standout moments include a riveting rendition of Subdivisions and Peart's masterfully executed drum solo, The Rhythm Method. Exploring themes of technology, emotional distance, and the passage of time, this double-live release solidified Rush's reputation as one of the most technically proficient live acts in music history.
