The Hits 1 is a greatest hits compilation by Prince, released September 14, 1993 by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. Issued as a standalone single-disc companion to the larger three-CD box set The Hits/The B-Sides, the album was compiled following Prince's public dispute with Warner Bros. that led him to change his name to an unpronounceable symbol earlier that year, prompting the label to assemble a hits package from his extensive back catalog.
The eighteen-track collection spans Prince's Warner Bros. era from Soft and Wet through Diamonds and Pearls and 7, including signature hits When Doves Cry, 1999, Let's Go Crazy, Sign 'O' the Times, and Alphabet St. It also features a live recording of Nothing Compares 2 U, along with Pink Cashmere, making the disc notable to longtime fans for material not otherwise available on Prince's standard studio albums.
