Released on January 12, 1981, The Nature of the Beast is the ninth studio album by the Canadian rock band April Wine. Recorded at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, the album represents the band's greatest commercial peak, reaching the top 30 on the Billboard 200 and achieving Platinum status in both the United States and Canada. Produced by Myles Goodwyn and Mike Stone, the record perfectly balanced high-octane hard rock with radio-friendly ballads. The album's most enduring success is the power ballad Just Between You and Me, which became the first music video by a Canadian artist ever played on MTV. Other highlights include the driving anthem Sign of the Gypsy Queen, a cover of the Lorence Hud song that became a definitive rock radio staple, and the energetic opener All Over Town. With its crisp production and the band's signature three-guitar attack, The Nature of the Beast solidified April Wine's status as international arena rock headliners and remains a cornerstone of early 1980s melodic rock.
