Alanis Morissette's album Jagged Little Pill, released on June 13, 1995, by Maverick Records, marked her third studio album and her first to be released internationally. This alternative rock and post-grunge album became a massive commercial success, selling over 33 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time and the second-best-selling album by a female artist. In the United States, it has been certified 17x Platinum by the RIAA. Jagged Little Pill topped the Billboard 200 chart for 12 non-consecutive weeks and remained in the top 10 for 72 weeks. Billboard recognized it as the Top Pop Album of the 1990s. The album spawned several hit singles, including "You Oughta Know," "Hand in My Pocket," "Ironic," "You Learn," "Head over Feet," and "All I Really Want." These songs achieved significant chart success on the Billboard Hot 100, Mainstream Rock Tracks, Modern Rock Tracks, and Adult Top 40 charts. Jagged Little Pill garnered critical acclaim, winning five Grammy Awards in 1996, including Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, and Best Rock Song for "You Oughta Know."
