The game's story casts characters from the anime series as historical figures in a strategic card game that differs from the official trading card game rules. Instead of traditional duels, players navigate a 7x7 grid.
The game was released in Japan on September 6, 2001, and in North America on February 18, 2003. The European release was on September 26, 2003, followed by Australia on October 10, 2003. The game was a commercial success, selling over one million units worldwide. It sold 76,248 units in Japan and 1.37 million units in the United States and Europe, for a total of 1.446 million units sold worldwide.
