Released on September 23, 1977, by ABC Records, Aja is the sixth studio album by the American jazz-rock duo Steely Dan and is widely considered their magnum opus. Recorded over a year of intense studio sessions in Los Angeles and New York, band leaders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker utilized a rotating cast of nearly 40 elite session musicians to achieve a level of "sonic perfection" that has since made the album a staple for audiophiles. The record is celebrated for its sophisticated fusion of jazz, rock, and pop, featuring iconic performances such as Steve Gadd's legendary drum solo and Wayne Shorter's tenor sax work on the eight-minute title track. A massive critical and commercial success, Aja peaked at number 3 on the Billboard charts, won a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Recording, and includes the hit singles "Peg," "Deacon Blues," and "Josie".
