The 1997 Canadian television film Pit Pony, based on the Joyce Barkhouse novel, is a historical family drama set in the coal mining community of Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, in 1901. It tells the story of ten-year-old Willie MacLean, whose life is tragically altered when a mining accident injures his father and kills his older brother, forcing Willie to leave school and begin working in the dangerous coal pit to support his family. Willie grapples with the brutal realities of his new life as a child laborer but finds solace and companionship in the titular pit pony, a horse used to haul coal in the underground tunnels, with whom he forms a deep emotional connection that helps him endure his hardship.
