Independence Day is a 1996 American science-fiction action film directed by Roland Emmerich. The movie follows a group of people as they attempt to survive and fight back against an alien invasion that threatens to destroy the world.
The film is set on July 2nd, when a massive alien spacecraft enters Earth's orbit, causing panic and chaos across the globe. The President of the United States, played by Bill Pullman, orders a counter-attack, but the aliens quickly overpower Earth's military forces and proceed to launch a full-scale invasion.
The movie follows several characters, including a fighter pilot named Captain Steven Hiller, played by Will Smith, a satellite technician named David Levinson, played by Jeff Goldblum, and the President's advisors as they try to figure out how to defeat the aliens and save humanity.
The film features impressive special effects and intense action sequences, including a memorable scene where the White House is destroyed by a massive energy beam fired by the alien spacecraft.
Independence Day was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $800 million worldwide and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year. It also spawned a sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, which was released in 2016.
