Grumpy Old Men is a 1993 American romantic comedy film directed by Donald Petrie and written by Mark Steven Johnson. The movie stars Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as two lifelong neighbors and friends, John Gustafson and Max Goldman, who are both retired and live in the small town of Wabasha, Minnesota.
The movie revolves around the ongoing feud between John and Max, who constantly bicker and play pranks on each other. However, their rivalry intensifies when a new neighbor, the attractive and free-spirited Ariel (played by Ann-Margret), moves in across the street, and both men develop feelings for her.
As the competition for Ariel's affection heats up, John and Max must come to terms with their own aging and the importance of their friendship. Along the way, the movie explores themes of love, loss, and the value of lifelong relationships.
The film was a box office success and received positive reviews for its humor, charm, and the performances of its veteran cast. It was followed by a sequel, "Grumpier Old Men," in 1995.
