Grey's Anatomy is an American medical drama television series that premiered on ABC in 2005. The first season of the show aired from March to May 2005 and consisted of nine episodes.
The series follows the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attending physicians at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show's central character is Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), a surgical intern who is the daughter of renowned surgeon Ellis Grey (Kate Burton).
Season 1 begins with Meredith and her fellow interns starting their surgical residency at Seattle Grace Hospital. The other interns include Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).
As they navigate the challenges of their residency, the interns must also deal with personal and professional challenges. Meredith struggles with the fact that her mother, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, is also a former surgeon at the hospital. Cristina is ambitious and focused, often putting her career above her personal relationships. George is kind-hearted but lacks confidence, while Izzie struggles with her past as a lingerie model. Alex is arrogant and often clashes with the other interns.
The show also focuses on the relationships between the characters. Meredith has a complicated relationship with attending physician Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), who is married but still pursues a relationship with her. Cristina becomes involved with attending physician Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington), who is also her mentor. Izzie develops feelings for heart surgeon Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who is a patient at the hospital. George develops a crush on Meredith but ultimately ends up in a relationship with nurse Olivia Harper (Sarah Utterback).
Throughout the season, the characters deal with various medical cases, from routine surgeries to high-risk procedures. The season ends with a major cliffhanger, as Meredith's personal and professional life is thrown into turmoil.
