Released on August 12, 1983, Alpha is the second studio album by the British progressive rock supergroup Asia. Following the massive global success of their self-titled debut, the band—comprised of John Wetton (King Crimson), Steve Howe (Yes), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), and Geoff Downes (The Buggles/Yes)—returned to Le Studio in Quebec with producer Mike Stone to craft a follow-up that leaned further into a polished, radio-ready AOR sound. The album reached number six on the Billboard 200 and achieved Platinum status, driven by the top-ten success of the lead single Don't Cry and the soaring power ballad The Smile Has Left Your Eyes. While the production emphasized dense synthesizer layers and Wetton’s melodic vocals, Alpha remains a significant title in the band's history as the final studio effort to feature the complete original lineup until their reunion over two decades later. The album's sophisticated arrangements and iconic Roger Dean cover art continue to make it a quintessential example of early 1980s arena rock.
