Released on October 8, 1988, As I Am is the eighteenth studio album by legendary Canadian vocalist Anne Murray. Produced by Kyle Lehning, the album finds Murray embracing a polished adult contemporary and country-pop aesthetic that defined her late-80s output. The project was recorded at several prestigious Nashville studios, including Sound Stage and Emerald Sound, featuring a group of elite session musicians. The album’s lead single, Flying on Your Own, is a cover of a track by fellow Canadian songwriter Rita MacNeil and reached the top of the Canadian Country charts. Throughout the 10-track collection, Murray’s signature rich alto voice explores themes of independence, resilience, and the complexities of long-term romance. The production is characterized by smooth arrangements, blending soft synthesizers with acoustic guitars and subtle percussion. As I Am was a commercial success in Murray’s home country, earning a Gold certification and further solidifying her status as a cross-genre icon. From the upbeat drive of Take It From My Heart to the tender introspection of the title track, the album remains a quintessential example of late-1980s pop-country craftsmanship.
