Released in 1983, Tour De Force is the sixth studio album by the southern rock band 38 Special, serving as a powerful follow-up to their multi-platinum success. Produced by Rodney Mills alongside band members Don Barnes and Jeff Carlisi, the record was captured at the iconic Studio One in Doraville, Georgia. This project highlights the group’s masterful blend of rhythmic southern rock grit and polished mainstream pop sensibilities. The album features the hit singles If I'd Been The One and Back Where You Belong, both of which became staples of eighties arena rock and were accompanied by popular music videos. Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant lead the vocal performances, supported by the dual-drumming foundation of Jack Grondin and Steve Brookins. Mastering engineer Bob Ludwig finalized the high-fidelity sound at Masterdisk in New York, while the visual presentation was helmed by art directors Chuck Beeson and Norman Moore. With its Platinum certification and strong chart performance, the album stands as a definitive document of the band’s peak commercial era.
