The Hunger Games is a dystopian science fiction film released in 2012, directed by Gary Ross. It is based on the popular young adult novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth in the lead roles and is set in a dark and oppressive future where an annual televised event forces young people to fight to the death in a brutal competition.
The movie is set in the nation of Panem, which is divided into 12 districts and ruled by a totalitarian government in the Capitol. As a form of control and punishment for a past uprising, the Capitol requires each district to send one boy and one girl, known as "tributes," to participate in a deadly event called the Hunger Games. The tributes are chosen through a lottery system known as the Reaping.
The story follows Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), a young girl from District 12 who volunteers as a tribute to save her younger sister Prim (played by Willow Shields) from having to participate in the games. Along with her fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta Mellark (played by Josh Hutcherson), Katniss is sent to the Capitol to train and prepare for the brutal competition.
Once the Hunger Games begin, Katniss and Peeta must use their survival skills, wit, and courage to navigate through a dangerous and treacherous arena filled with deadly traps and other tributes who are willing to kill to win. As the games progress, Katniss becomes a symbol of resistance against the oppressive Capitol, and her actions have far-reaching consequences.
