Idiocracy is a 2006 American satirical science-fiction comedy film directed by Mike Judge. The movie follows the story of a man named Joe Bauers, played by Luke Wilson, who is a low-level soldier in the United States Army. He is selected for a top-secret military hibernation experiment, but due to a mishap, he and a prostitute named Rita, played by Maya Rudolph, are forgotten and wake up 500 years later in a dystopian future where society has become incredibly dumb and anti-intellectual.
In this future, the world is populated by people who are largely uneducated, uninterested in learning, and obsessed with consumerism and entertainment. Corporations have taken over and everything from government to health care is run for profit. The film explores the consequences of a society that has become complacent, apathetic, and intellectually stunted, resulting in a world where stupidity is celebrated and intelligence is ridiculed.
Joe and Rita find themselves as the smartest people in this new world and must navigate their way through a society that is incredibly different from the one they left behind. Along the way, they encounter bizarre characters and situations, including a president who is a former professional wrestler and a society that relies on an energy drink called Brawndo to survive.
Idiocracy is a hilarious and scathing critique of modern society, and its themes of anti-intellectualism, consumerism, and corporate greed are as relevant today as they were when the film was released. The movie is well-acted, well-written, and visually engaging, making it a must-see for fans of satire and science fiction.
