Exorcist: The Beginning is a 2004 horror film directed by Renny Harlin and starring Stellan Skarsgård. The film is a prequel to the original 1973 classic horror film, "The Exorcist", and explores the backstory of the demonic possession that takes place in the original film.

The film is set in 1949 and follows Father Lankester Merrin, played by Skarsgård, as he is sent to Africa to investigate an archaeological dig site that may have unearthed a significant religious artifact. However, as he begins to uncover the dark secrets of the site, he finds himself in the middle of a battle between good and evil, ultimately leading to a harrowing exorcism.

The movie explores themes of faith, evil, and the power of belief. The character of Father Merrin is portrayed as a deeply flawed but determined priest struggling to come to terms with his faith and the horrors he witnesses. The film also incorporates elements of African mythology and colonialism, which add to the film's overall sense of unease and horror.

While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it still garnered a following among horror movie fans for its intense and unsettling atmosphere, as well as for its connection to the iconic original film. "Exorcist: The Beginning" is a must-watch for fans of the horror genre and for those interested in exploring the deeper themes and questions raised by the concept of demonic possession.
