Avatar, released on December 18, 2009, is an epic science fiction film set in the mid-22nd century on Pandora, a habitable moon where humans are mining a valuable mineral. The story follows Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine who controls a genetically engineered Na'vi body, an "avatar," to interact with the indigenous humanoid Na'vi people. As the mining colony's expansion threatens the Na'vi, Jake becomes torn between his mission and his growing connection to the native culture and a Na'vi woman named Neytiri. The film was directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. Major actors and actresses include Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. Producers were James Cameron and Jon Landau. Avatar achieved significant box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time with a worldwide gross of over $2.923 billion.
