Released on March 17, 2017, Atomica (originally titled Deep Burial) is a claustrophobic sci-fi thriller set in a radiation-blasted near future. Directed by Dagen Merrill and produced by Syfy Films, the story follows Abby Dixon (Sarah Habel), a corporate safety inspector dispatched to a remote, underground nuclear power plant in the desert after its communications go offline. Upon arrival, she finds the facility in disrepair and occupied by only two people: a jumpy maintenance worker named Robinson (Dominic Monaghan) and a seemingly unhinged researcher, Dr. Zek (Tom Sizemore). As Abby attempts to repair the station, she is forced to navigate a web of paranoia and mechanical sabotage to uncover the truth about the facility's stability and the true identities of its inhabitants. Filmed in a decommissioned Titan II missile silo, the production emphasizes a grounded, "lived-in" aesthetic with minimal CGI, focusing instead on psychological tension and the isolation of its subterranean setting. Atomica offers a mature, character-driven exploration of corporate ethics and survival, anchored by strong performances from its veteran cast.
