American History X is a powerful crime drama released on October 30, 1998, exploring themes of white supremacy, redemption, and the cyclical nature of hatred. The film centers on Derek Vinyard, a former neo-Nazi who, after serving time in prison for a violent hate crime, attempts to prevent his younger brother, Danny, from following in his destructive footsteps. The narrative unfolds through a series of flashbacks, often in black and white, depicting Derek's descent into the white power movement and the brutal consequences of his actions. Upon his release, a reformed Derek tries to guide Danny away from the same path, but the deep-seated hatred and violence within their community prove to be a formidable challenge.

The film was directed by Tony Kaye and produced by John Morrissey and Steve Tisch. Its major actors and actresses include Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard, Edward Furlong as Danny Vinyard, Fairuza Balk as Stacey, Stacy Keach as Cameron Alexander, Elliott Gould as Murray, Avery Brooks as Dr. Bob Sweeney, and Beverly D'Angelo as Doris Vinyard.

Despite critical acclaim for its performances, particularly Edward Norton's, American History X had a modest box office performance. Against a production budget of $20 million, it grossed approximately $23.9 million worldwide.
