The DVD release "Alien Nation - The Complete Series" compiles the full run of the science fiction police procedural television series, which originally aired on Fox from September 18, 1989, to May 7, 1990. The series is set in an alternate near future where a spacecraft carrying Tenctonese, an alien species bred as slaves, crash-lands on Earth. These "Newcomers" are then integrated into American society, often facing discrimination and cultural clashes.
The show focuses on the partnership between human police detective Matthew Sikes, portrayed by Gary Graham, and his Newcomer partner, George Francisco, played by Eric Pierpoint. Other major cast members include Michele Scarabelli as Susan Francisco, Lauren Woodland as Emily Francisco, Sean Six as Buck Francisco, and Terri Treas as Cathy Frankel. Kenneth Johnson is a key figure in the series, serving as executive producer, a producer, and a director for multiple episodes, as well as developing the series and writing the pilot. Other notable directors include Harry Longstreet, John McPherson, Kevin Hooks, and Rob Bowman. Producers for the series include Tom Chehak and Art Seidel.
The television series itself did not have a traditional box office performance as it was a television broadcast. However, it was adapted from the 1988 film Alien Nation, which had a worldwide box office gross of approximately $32.2 million on a budget of $16 million. After the series' cancellation, its story was continued through five made-for-television movies: Dark Horizon (1994), Body and Soul (1995), Millennium (1996), The Enemy Within (1996), and The Udara Legacy (1997), all of which brought back the original cast.
