A History of Violence is a psychological thriller film that was released in 2005. It is directed by David Cronenberg and is based on a graphic novel of the same name by John Wagner and Vince Locke. The movie stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt in lead roles.

The story centers around Tom Stall (played by Viggo Mortensen), a mild-mannered small-town diner owner in Indiana, who becomes a local hero after he foils a robbery attempt at his diner with lethal force. However, his newfound notoriety attracts the attention of menacing strangers who arrive in town, including Carl Fogarty (played by Ed Harris), who claims that Tom is someone else - a former criminal with a violent past.

As Tom's peaceful life starts to unravel, he is forced to confront his own dark history and question his identity. His wife Edie (played by Maria Bello) and their children become caught up in the escalating violence and turmoil that follows. Tom's past catches up with him, and he must grapple with the consequences of his actions and face the truth about who he really is.
